\nAre you curious to unveil which is your equivalent star sign in this ironic Medici and Florentine Horoscope? And to discover the predictions for 2021?<\/em>
\nJust a few advices before starting:<\/em>
\n1) If you are impatient to discover your equivalent star sign, I allow you to skip the dull part concerning the history of astrology (but honestly it is not so dull! Please imagine how I worked hard to write it\u2026)<\/em>
\n2) If you don\u2019t know it yet, it is better to calculate your rising sign before reading the article\u2026 the Medici used to consider the rising sign more important than the star sign!<\/em>
\n3) Don\u2019t trust too much Flora\u2019s predictions for 2021\u2026 She doesn\u2019t always guess right!<\/em>

Astrology\u2019s history from Babylon to Medici\u2019s court<\/strong><\/p>\n

Astrology<\/strong>\u2019s origins are very ancient: in the 14th<\/sup> cent. BC, in Mesopotamia<\/strong>, people consulted the stars and identified them with myths and deities. The zodiac constellations<\/strong> were divided into 11 months of the year, according to the epic poem of  Gilgamesh<\/strong>. The missing star sign was the Libra<\/strong>: it was depicted in the Scorpio<\/strong>\u2019s claws and it was part of it. Just in 3rd<\/sup> cent. BC, the two star signs were divided. Greek civilization<\/strong> learnt the basics of astrology from the Babylonian civilization<\/strong>: a lot of scholars wrote a constellations catalogue, studied the calculation of ellipses and the orbit of planets, and introduced the decans from Egypt. Just to mention  some of them: Thales of Miletus, Eudoxus of Cnidus, Aratus, Eratosthenes of Cyrene, Teucer of Babylon, and the well-known Ptolemy<\/strong>, the author of \u201cAlmagest\u201d and \u201cTetrabiblos\u201d, who composed the definitive catalogue of 1022 stars, divided in 48 star constellations.<\/p>\n

The interpretation of the horoscope had an extraordinary success during the Augustan age and the imperial age in Rome<\/strong>, but the mania for astrology was criticized by Cicero<\/strong>. Everybody knows that the first Roman emperor, Augustus<\/strong>, chose as his device his rising sign, the Capricorn<\/strong>. The same device was used, 16 centuries later, by a certain Cosimo I de\u2019 Medici<\/strong> in Florence.<\/p>\n

Cosimo \u2013 who was born on June 12th<\/sup>, in 1519<\/strong>, under the star sign of  Gemini<\/strong> \u2013 was elected Duke of Florence<\/strong> on January 9th<\/sup>, in 1537<\/strong>, under the star sign of Capricorn<\/strong>. Hence, do not be surprised if, once entered into the Palazzo Vecchio<\/strong> in Florence, you will be surrounded by walls embellished with Capricorns: they are a clear homage to Augustus and Cosimo I de\u2019 Medici.<\/p>\n

If during the Middle Age <\/strong>astrology was associated with Christianity<\/strong> (12 months, 12 star signs, 12 apostles), with the flowering of art in illuminated manuscripts<\/strong>, during the Quattrocento<\/strong> the astrological cycles became extremely important.<\/p>\n

Commissioners and patrons, indeed, did not dare to undertake wars or diplomatic actions without firstly consult the horoscope<\/strong> and their \u201cbirth chart<\/strong>\u201d. Astrology was at the service of the political propaganda<\/strong> of the patron, and, if possible, it was manipulated in order to change the stars will and their destiny.<\/p>\n

In the Quattrocento<\/strong>, Florence<\/strong> became the custodian of a wide hermetic and neoplatonic erudition<\/strong>, due to the arrival of learned and erudite Byzantine scholars for the Council of Florence<\/strong> in 1439<\/strong>. The presence of the philosopher Gemistus Pletho<\/strong> and Cardinal Bessarion<\/strong> was essential for the intellectual development of Florentine culture, as the translation of \u201cCorpus Hermeticum<\/strong>\u201d by Marsilio Ficino<\/strong> for Cosimo the Elder de\u2019 Medici.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The astrological apogee of this cosmic hike is undoubtedly the painting decoration of the dome in the Old Sacristy<\/strong>, in the Basilica of San Lorenzo<\/strong>, painted by Giuliano d\u2019Arrigo<\/strong> known as Pesello<\/strong> in 1442<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It depicts the celestial vault<\/strong> of the 4th<\/sup> July 1442<\/strong>, when Ren\u00e9 of Anjou<\/strong>, king of Jerusalem, arrived in Florence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is the first star map<\/strong> of art history, the first painted horoscope<\/strong>, entrusted by Cosimo the Elder de\u2019 Medici<\/strong> and painted by Pesello with the help of the famous astronomer Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli<\/strong>, who helped Brunelleschi<\/strong> as well for the astronomical instrument of the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. The sky of the 4th<\/sup> July 1442<\/strong> was propitious: the hope for a Crusade<\/strong> just around the corner, lead by Ren\u00e9 of Anjou <\/strong>(who could flaunt the title of king of Jerusalem and was at the prophetic age of 33), reflected in the stars of the vault.<\/p>\n

You will be surprise to ascertain that the same decoration is present in the dome of Pazzi Chapel<\/strong>, in the Church of Santa Croce<\/strong>. And imagine that the Medici and the Pazzi were sworn enemies!…<\/p>\n

But I imagine you have enough of history \u2013 the list of astrological examples in Italian art history is still boundless \u2013 and you champt at the bit to discover your star sign, according to the Horoscope of Flora<\/strong>. Here you are!<\/p>\n
